The Art of Making Art

Glass figurines make wonderful gifts, but how are they made?  The process isn’t easy.  They start out being made the same way that any glass is, with hot rods.  One rod is used as support, and the other is used to add glass.  Pressure is added when necessary to flatten the glass.  Once the desired thickness is achieved, the glass is removed and shaped into the desired figure.  However, this must be done quickly and in a hot environment or the glass will cool and harden.

Making colored glass figurines is done much in the same way.  While adding glass in the first step, colored glass is added to certain areas that will tint the glass when molded.  If the entire figurine is colored, colored glass can be added as tints as well.  If you would prefer a clear figurine, gold or silver accents can be painted on once the glass is cooled.glass figurines

When it comes to, art glass collectibles you want to do everything you can to keep them in the best condition possible. Thankfully there are several easy and practical ways to do this.

Always keep figurines out of direct sunlight. Exposure to direct sunlight over time can fade their colors.

The best way to clean dust off of your figurines is with a small, soft bristled brush. A small artist paint brush or a makeup brush both work well.

Store your collectibles in an enclosed curio cabinet in order to minimize exposure to dust. If you do this you won’t have to dust them nearly as often as you would if they’re out in the open air. This also keeps them safe from children and pets.

The best way to clean a dirty glass figurine is with warm water, a mild dishwashing detergent and a soft cloth. Never use anything abrasive and never use a strong cleaner like bleach or any cleaner that has ammonia in it. These could lead to permanent damage to the figurine. If the figurine has an air hole put some tape over it to keep water from getting inside. If water gets inside the figurine it could lead to structural damage over time.

If cleaning a collectible item in your sink first lay a bath towel in the bottom of the sink. This way you’ll have a cushion to protect against potential damage or breakage if you accidently drop it.

Never put a figurine in a dishwasher since a glass figurine is much more delicate than china dinnerware. A dishwasher is almost certain to cause permanent damage to it due to the high heat and water pressure.

Glass figurines are so delicate and lovely somehow they are hard to resist.  Their beauty and ornate details draw us to them.  They can be small tiny figurines or larger ones that can be the center of attention on a table or mantle.  Their shapes and styles are just as varied; animals, ships, lighthouses, buildings, hearts, crosses and more.  No matter what shape or style they are special.

Some glass figurines are accented with gorgeous gold, silver or other striking colors.  What about a beautiful hummingbird feeding from a vibrant red geranium?  Adding color will add a subtle flare to an already delicate piece. A wonderful way to display your figurine is in front of or on top of a mirror.  The reflections will greatly enhance the look of your treasured keepsake.  Be sure to place it where the sun will capture its special qualities.  Do you know someone who collects glass figurines?  If so, add to their collection by giving them a gift that they will enjoy for years to come.

Glass Figurine Art

Glass started becoming highly collectible beginning in the late 20th century.  Some of the more common techniques used for producing glass  include; glass blowing, kiln-casting, fusing, slumping, pate-de-verre, flame working, hot sculpting and cold working.  Glass can be cut with a diamond saw or abrasives and polished to show off facets.  Acids, caustic, or abrasive substances can be used to etch into glass to create artful works.  In the 1920’s a new mould-etch process was invented using a mould so each cast piece was manufactured with the etched image already on the surface of the glass.

With all these methods of working with glass it is no wonder we have such wonderful works of art.  No matter what method is used, beautiful creations are made; stained glass, glass sculptures, paperweights, vases, and more.  All these pieces of art can be purchased for a few dollars to thousands of dollars.  Everyone can add glass figurine art to their home or office in all shapes, sizes, designs and colors creating their own decorative statement.  Add artistic glass and enjoy.
