A Thanksgiving to Remember

glass-animal-figurinesTo this day, my grandmother hasn’t let me live it down. I’m referring to an incident from my childhood, when we drove over to Grandma’s house for Thanksgiving dinner. I was about 5 and had just finished stuffing my face with turkey with all the trimmings, corn, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. The adults were understandably sluggish after this bountiful feast, and so they failed to notice when I slipped away from the table and went to look at the glass animal figurines on a high shelf in the living room.

Moments later, the clatter from a few rooms over was almost deafening, and my parents and relations came running with genuine concern. When they saw that I had managed to knock over every last knick-knack, my fate was sealed. I spent the rest of that evening helping with washing and drying the dishes. It doesn’t seem to matter how old my grandmother gets; she’ll always remember that holiday from long ago.

Fishing Décor Decorating

fishing decor

Do you love to spend your time fishing?  Why not add a touch of fishing decor to your abode.  It will be a great way to start conversations about your favorite subject.  I don’t know a fisherman that doesn’t like to talk about their latest catch.  You can decorate your entire home or just a room.  First, you may want to consult other family members to see if their love of fishing matches yours!

Be sure not to add too many items to a room; if so it could look cluttered and like you were trying too hard.  A few deliberate items will do the trick.  If you have several pictures of fishing trips, frame and mat them identically and display them as a grouping at eye level.  Adding a decorative fishing frame to the room would be a nice compliment.  If you choose to use an area rug with a fishing theme then you will only need a few accent pieces as the rug will carry the theme in the room.  A fishing accent throw pillow, an accent table lamp, a mounted fish, a throw, wall art, or a trophy will continue the theme.  Remember to only add a few of these items to the room.  Judicial placement of your fishing décor will greatly enhance the appearance of your room.

Many Faces of a Lighthouse

lighthouse decorLighthouses come in different shapes, sizes, colors and designs.  Their designs were practical for the environment in which they were built.  Some lighthouses are built in the middle of water, on a rocky cliff, a sandy beach, or along harbors.  Architects used local materials to build their lighthouses and constructed them to with stand its environment.

The lighthouse decor used for constructing lighthouses is round, pyramid, skeletal, conical and square.  The round designs are often made of brick and painted.  They can be tall or short depending on their location.  The pyramid lighthouse is not used much being made of wood or steel.  A skeletal design consists of a steel framework for little wind resistance.  Finally the square lighthouse encompasses the tower being built into the keeper’s house creating a square look.  There are other shapes and styles depending on where you live.  The designs are endless.

Making a Decorative Birdhouse

If you have a few hours and some basic tools, you can build a decorative birdhouse for your yard.  This is a great project to include children.  While working together you can teach about birds, building and safety with tools.  First you need to gather the necessary tools; saw, hammer, screwdriver, goggles, paint brush and a tape measure.  Now gather the supplies; plywood, wooden dowel, screws, wood glue, nails, sandpaper, and exterior paint.  Once you have everything, you are ready to get started.

Cut two rectangles cutting the tops so it forms a peak for the roof.  This will be the front and back walls. Drill a ½” diameter hole in one of the rectangles for the bird’s entrance.  Pre-drill a ¼” hole for the wooden dowel to create a perch.  Cut two rectangles for the side walls and 2 for the roof as well as one piece for the floor.  Glue the sides and roof together letting it dry.  Once dry enough nail it all together.  Turn the birdhouse over and screw the floor in place, no gluing.  During the off season, you can remove the floor of the decorative birdhouse and clean it out.  Go ahead and sand and paint creating the look you want.  Be sure not to paint the inside as bird will not nest if painted.  Have fun and get creative.

Whale and Dolphin Figurines in the Wild

Dolphin FigurinesHave you ever seen whales migrate?  What a sight!  Living in southern California we are blessed with the migration of several different kinds of whales; Gray Whales, Blue Whales, Humpback Whales, Minke Whales,  and sometimes Orca Whales also known as ‘Killer Whales’.  Each year whales will travel between 10,000 and 12,000 miles round trip from the warm waters of Mexico to give birth, to the cold waters of Alaska to feed.  Due to their near-shore migration route, we can easily watch their yearly migration.

Along with seeing whales come the dolphin.  Some seen here are the Common, Bottlenose, Risso, Pacific White Sided and Dall’s Porpoise.  Dolphins love to play and jump above the ocean and surf the waves.  I remember a time when whale watching, this dolphin came from nowhere and started jumping the crests of the boat waves.  Next thing I knew, there were dolphin figurines all around the boat, jumping and playing with each other.  You couldn’t help but smile and laugh while watching their antics. You could see that they were having so much fun!  If you ever have a chance to go whale and dolphin watching, I would highly recommend it!

The Art of Garden Organization

metal-yard-artLike most gardeners, I’m quick to take credit for my green thumb when in fact my true talent is for organization. It took me a while to figure out that no matter how gorgeous your blooms and blossoms might be, the effect is wasted unless you know how to arrange them artfully. I like to plant complementary colors and styles in the same vicinity of the garden.

On top of that, I like to further organize the garden area with some metal yard art. Without these stylish accents, observers don’t know where to look or spend time in the garden. The key is to create a natural line of sight from one landmark to another with the flowers serving as a continuous presence along the way. Over the years I’ve had many guests over to the house and in the spring and summer they are always complimenting me on the garden.

Lighthouse DecorHave you ever thought about spending a night in a lighthouse?  Lighthouses contain so much history, if only they could tell their stories.  Just imagine the families that have lived there and protected the seamen from the rocky shores.  Lighthouses are numerous along our Atlantic and Pacific Oceans as well as the Great Lakes.  They come in all shapes and sizes too.

There are several dozen lighthouses that can accommodate guests in the United States.  They are along the west coast; Washington, Oregon and California.  Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York along the east coast; as well as Michigan and Minnesota around the Great Lakes.  By today’s standards, some have rustic accommodations without refrigerators and a simple one burner stove with a solar heated shower outside along with changing your own linen.  Others are elegant Bed and Breakfasts serving champagne and spectacular meals.  No matter which way you want to experience an overnight stay at a lighthouse, there is one just for you.  Don’t forget to visit the gift shop and bring home a lighthouse décor souvenir.

Reminisce with Glass Animal Figurines

glass animal figurinesWhile visiting a friend, I was amazed at the glass animal figurines that she had collected.  She had a large curio cabinet where she displayed them.  Not only was this a great way to display them but smart as well.  They all stayed safe inside away from the daily chaos of kids and animals.

She told me that when she was young and on a trip with her family, she bought her first glass figurine.  That started a tradition.  Every time she goes on a vacation, she brings back a glass animal figurine to add to her collection.  She said that sometimes it is an animal that might live in the region and sometimes she gets it just because she likes it.  Either way, she does not see this tradition changing in the near future.

Collecting Decorative Wall Plates

decorative wall platesMany years ago I started to collect decorative wall plates.  They were part of a signed and dated limited series.  I had so much fun with them.  Each month I would receive one and it was always a surprise.  Of course I knew it was coming, but I never knew which design would be next.  I never looked ahead because that would ruin my surprise.

Once I received the entire series of 12 plates, I laid them all out.  I used a wall in my dining room creating a pattern that really showed them off.  I love entertaining and having these beautiful plates decorating the wall.  I get joy out of each of the designs and it reminds me of the joy I had opening up each one as they arrived.

Add Decorative Vases

When decorating a room, adding flowers or greenery in decorative vases brings in a touch of the outdoors.  Consider the area that you have for your vase.  Is the area round, square, rectangle or oblong? Would it been seen from all sides?  Once you know where you are going to put your vase; you can then determine its shape.  A round table would be enhanced by a low round vase that can be seen from all sides.  A tall vase would fill a corner table nicely.  Displaying a fan shaped vase on a mantle would add a bit a drama and color.

Decorative vases come in glass, metal, woods, ceramic and more.  Some are smooth, some with texture, some with color, some have embellishments; the shapes and designs are endless.  Vases can add some fun to a room too; how about animals such as birds, dolphin décor, cows or pigs.  Colors can be classic or dramatic such as plaids and polka dots.  Whatever you choose, make your vase stand out.
